1.      People can’t be motivated by another person. They have to motivate themselves. If you are a parent of a teenager, you already know this one…. If you are a manager of a slow performing group of individuals you know it, too. You hold meeting after meeting; contest after contest; workshop after workshop to no avail. No matter how hard you push, explain or reward, you can’t force them forward.

No you can’t motivate others. But you can make them feel uncomfortable with their own status quo… Because everyone (just like) you is influenced by...

Resolve to Limit Yourself!

I have done this in the past… but like most people, I find that by mid-February my “To Do” list has become vacated. It is difficult to stay focused on the goals that I set in a hurry back in January.

Instead of listing what I can do, I am starting to list what I won’t or can’t do...

There is No "Secret" to Life!

 Everyone knows that you have to do more than just THINK your way to success…You have to ACT on it believing it will happen. I know people who harbor negative emotions and can’t understand why they result in one traumatic episode after another.

There was a book out several years ago called “The Secret.” It basically says that if you think positive thoughts and focus your mind on the results you want, you will be successful in life and business. I don’t disagree with the power of positive thinking… I disagree that this is some mystical secret...

Are You Uncomfortable?

No Pain; No Change

People change when the pain of changing is LESS than the pain of keeping the status quo. The fact is everyone is changing all the time. But many of us like to settle in and get comfortable. We find our place, our niche our warm and fuzzy place and we don’t want to be moved.

In my prior occupation as a church minister, we sang a hymn that said, “I shall not be moved.” That was truer about attitudes and complacency than it was anything religious. I don’t know anyone...

The credit union has always based its business on people coming in to interact with tellers and managers.

Learning Customer Language

Learning someone else's language means learning their subtle nuances and expressions. Many people who journey to the United States are confused when they confront someone with a different regional accent or expressions. Try asking where the “water fountain” is in New Hampshire, then ask someone in Alabama.  It is a completely different apparatus!

Can You BANK On It?

Confession: I haven’t been in a bank for several years.  At 57, I transact all of my bill payments from my laptop, on my smart phone and do most deposits through apps or ATM machines. Most of their other customers do as well. If your customers have roamed to the internet, maybe you should follow them before your business runs out completely.

Voice Mail Reinvention

My friend Mike is in sales for an international company. He makes phone calls to clients every day to sell a magazine that helps his clients make more money. Last year Mike decided to use a more proactive voice mail message than the traditional: “Hi, I am not in right now. Please wait for the beep and leave a short message. I will return your call shortly.”
